Merlin Adaptive Operations

Connect logs across systems instead of investigating each stream alone

Merlin is designed to correlate operational evidence so engineers can see when separate log streams describe different parts of the same incident.

Complex incidents cross system boundaries

An application may show timeouts, a database may show connection pressure and an identity service may show upstream failures. Reading each stream independently makes it easy to miss the relationship between them. Correlation places the evidence on a common operational timeline.

Useful correlation needs more than matching timestamps

Time is an important signal, but proximity alone does not prove a relationship. A useful investigation also considers source, service role, repeated sequences and whether one condition plausibly precedes another.

Correlation questions

  • Which events began within the same incident window?
  • Which components are dependencies of the affected service?
  • Does the same sequence recur on previous incidents?
  • Which signals recover together?
  • Which event remains independent of the main failure pattern?

Merlin’s operational signal model is intended to make these relationships easier to inspect and then explore through follow-up questions.
